More than 500 sailors compete for the Open Dutch Championship

Who will become Dutch Champion 2021 in his or her sailing class? From 8 to 10 October, more than 500 fanatical sailors will gather in Medemblik to decide who can take home that title. Many competitive sailor has been looking forward to this. This weekend the battle starts in 14 different classes on four different courses off the coast of the International Regatta Centre.

Combining top and recreational athletes
This spring, the organisers were forced to postpone the second part of the Allianz Regatta 2021 with all the recreational athletes due to the Covid measures. But this weekend, all driven amateurs will finally get the chance to compete in, as it looks now, glorious conditions. No less than 260 boats will participate in this postponed Open Dutch Championship with sailors ranging in age from 12 years to 60+ years. Among the participants are also sailors from our neighbouring countries as well as former Olympic participants and former core team members.
This year it was not possible to link the Open Dutch Championship to the Allianz Regatta and thus create the largest annual water sports event in the Netherlands. But the ambition of the Watersports Association and organiser TIG Sports to organise the Allianz Regatta for the recreational and elite sports together, still stands. Not only because this is a lot more efficient, but also to make the event more attractive for both the amateur and the international Olympic sailing professional.
Competition format
There will be three days of sailing on four different courses:
1. Keelboats course: J22, SB 20, Yngling, Etchells + Dart 18 (Catamaran)
2. One-man boat course: ILCA 4, 6, 7 and Contender
3. High Performance Course: 29er, 49erFX, Nacra 15, RS-Feva
4. Matchrace track: Dutch Matchracing Championships in Elliot 6m class
Event organiser Frans Hin is looking forward to it: “The predictions are really good. We can’t wish for a better October. The registrations are still very good this week, in short, we have great fields. We can see from the enthusiastic reactions that people are happy with the event where we organise and celebrate as many Dutch championships as possible together.”
